Taipei, July 13, 2012 (CENS) —. MediTek Inc., currently
Taiwan’s No. 1 chip designer by revenue, recently released a mobile
phone platform preloaded Twitter apps and services for feature phones in
a bid to gain shares in developing markets.
The MT6255-codenamed platform is embedded with MediaTek-developed
MRE software, which allows feature phone holders to connect to social
network website Twitter to download apps and services with minimum
memory and hardware requirements.
Also, the platform allows feature-phone makers to turn out phones
that deliver smartphone experience with less cost.
MediaTek will use the platform to increase its market shares in
developing economies, where feature phones remain dominant mobile
phones. According to market research firm Informa Telecom and Media, in
2013 developing economies will account for 60% of global market for
mobile phones. Feature phones will constitute 70% of developing
economies’. Mobile phones.
The company’s vice president, C.T. Chuang, stressed that
cooperating with Twitter makes the company’s feature phone platform
distinguished from rival products.
The company’s executives noted that in mainland China
smartphones have increasingly replaced feature phones. In other
developing economies feature phones remain the mainstream mobile phones.
They said the company will build the Twitter function into its
other mobile phone platforms. MT6255 is reportedly the world’s
first system-on-chip integrating EDGE-RX modem, radio frequency,
wireless connection and power management unit.
